About 924,700 adults were convicted of a felony in State
courts in 2000.
Of
the felons convicted in State court, over two thirds
were sentenced to prison or jail in 2000.
The
number of adults in the correctional population has been
increasing.
Over half of the increase in the prison population since
1995 is due to an increase in the prisoners convicted of
violent offenses.
